WNEDBS
The Western New England Double Bass
Society was founded in June 2000, by a group of bassists from the
Pioneer Valley that are interested in promoting the double bass
as the beautiful instrument that it is. The Society wishes
to produce concerts of small and large bass ensembles. And
it hopes to provide a strong network and camaraderie amongst its
players throughout New England.
The concept of the Society was conceived
after 40 bassists played at the Academy of Music for the Really
Big Show, Northampton Art Council's Four Sundays in February
series. The Society is directed toward producing more such
concerts and is the recipient of an Arts Lottery grant from the
Northampton Art Council. It is affiliated with the
International Society of Bassists, founded by the virtuoso
bassist, Gary Karr. The organization lists our club amongst
the few worldwide clubs in Bass World.
Performances include ensembles from all styles of music, all ages
of players, and all levels of ability. To date, bass
players from New Hampshire, southern Vermont, the Berkshires,
northern Connecticut, and eastern and central Massachusetts make
up our database of over 100. Musical arrangements, original
compositions in 2 to 6 part harmonies make up much of the
performances. Also, some theatrical performance art pieces,
young people's performance, and specialty acts are presented.
The Society has produced several concerts, workshops by renowned
visiting performers, Jazz Jam sessions, classical Ensembles,
youth recitals, health related lectures, and awards its members
from a Student Endowment. [Read more...]
